Jake K. Newell, Founder, Editor-in-Chief & Legal & UK/EU Political Lead
Jake was Called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in July 2017. He is currently completing his LLM at UCL. His long term intention is to practise at the UK Bar.
Jake graduated with an upper-second class LLB from the University of Essex. He was President of the Law Society, where he founded the Law Society Sponsorship Scheme. He served as a Research Assistant to Professor Sabine Michalowski and assisted Dr Matthew Stone with the organisation of the International Law Association Conference, becoming the only non-doctorate and most junior member on the committee. Jake has worked for outside clients (his portfolio includes City University London); his work has had international implications. Jake's work has also had significant domestic implications through his role as an independent consultant to the UK Administrative Justice Institute, led by Professor Maurice Sunkin QC. Jake also has ties with pro-bono organisations including the Citizens' Advice Bureau.
Alongside his studies, Jake is a freelance advocate at County Court level, appearing on behalf of clients in a variety of fields. Jake has been appointed to the editorial board of the UCL Journal of Law and Jurisprudence and is currently a consultant researcher for the UCL Public International Law Pro Bono Project in conjunction with the World Refugee Council. He was recruited for both roles in November 2017.
Aside from law, Jake is an avid footballer, and enjoys a wide range of music.
