Jake K. Newell, Founder, Editor-in-Chief & Legal Lead
Jake is a Barrister at East Anglian Chambers, where he sits on the Chambers Senior Management Committee and is sits on the Committee of the Norwich & Norfolk Junior Lawyers' Division. He has a broad Common Law practice and he has experience in a number of arenas. He does hold particular academic interests in the following areas: Public/Administrative Law, Human Rights Law, Immigration Law, European Union (EU) Law, Property Law, Trusts and Inheritance.
Prior to starting and completing pupillage at East Anglian Chambers, Jake was a Judicial Assistant to Lord Justice Dingemans in the Court of Appeal.
Background
Jake was Called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in July 2017, where he won a major scholarship (and received two other awards from his law school).
Prior to coming to the Bar, Jake acted as a Research Assistant on three different research projects. His work has been used on an international level.
After completing the Bar, Jake appeared as a freelance advocate with LPC Law before becoming an EU Settlement Scheme Legal Project Assistant at the AIRE Centre, having previously interned at the legal charity.
Whilst working as a freelance advocate, Jake completed his masters (LLM Public Law) at University College London (UCL), receiving a Distinction overall. His thesis was titled "Improving accommodation of religion in the workplace: Legal transplants between the European and American Experiences", which considered how fundamental rights were incorporated into private labour relations in two different jurisdictions (the EU and the US) and whether there was scope for mutual learning. During his time at UCL, Jake sat on the Editorial Board of the UCL Journal of Law and Jurisprudence. He was also a Researcher for the UCL Public International Law Project in his first year. In his second year he acted as a Consultant for the project. The focus of the research project was to assist the World Refugee Council to develop new approaches to manage the challenges presented by the increased numbers of refugees and internally displaced persons.
Aside from law, Jake is an avid footballer and runner, and enjoys a wide range of music.
